Diesel wholesale cheaper than petrol throughout June, yet pump price gap still remains

Despite the wholesale price of diesel being cheaper than petrol for all of June motorists are still paying 3p a litre more at the pumps.

The RAC’s Fuel Watch report for June shows the price of diesel has become the ‘elephant in the room’ with wholesale prices 1p to 3p a litre lower than petrol yet the average price of a litre of diesel is 120p, compared to 117p for petrol.

While some retailers have closed the gap between petrol and diesel on the forecourt, more closely reflecting wholesale prices, very few – if any – have moved their diesel price below petrol. In fact, the vast majority of retailers continue to keep a significant gap between the two fuels with diesel often 5p a litre more expensive. The latter group may be operating on wafer thin margins on petrol in order to remain competitive and trading this off against bigger margins on diesel in order to balance the books.

RAC fuel spokesman Simon Williams said: “The retail price of diesel has almost become a taboo subject despite 2.4bn litres being sold in May, compared to just 1.5bn litres of petrol. While there are twice as many petrol cars on the road, the increase in diesel usage shown in government statistics and the new car sales figures which show more than 50% of cars and light commercial vehicles leaving the showroom are powered by diesel, confirm that we are increasingly relying on diesel for both business and private use.

“Not only are diesel drivers now being demonised due to the increasing concerns over harmful nitrogen dioxide and particulate emissions, they are consistently having to pay a premium for their fuel. And, all this comes after years in which the taxation system has encouraged motorists to buy low carbon dioxide emitting vehicles. This has led to a big take-up of small fuel efficient diesel vehicles by motorists believing their choice of vehicle was good for the environment as well as their pocket.

“While retailers are obviously free to choose how much they charge for petrol and diesel, we believe that motorists deserve to be treated fairly and that means forecourt prices that reflect the wholesale market.”

The RAC’s Fuel Watch report shows that the price of diesel should drop by around 5p a litre in the next two weeks based on lower wholesale prices, although the motoring organisation has seen this throughout June with little to no forecourt price change so therefore has little hope of this saving being passed on.

Simon Williams added: “Essentially, what is required is a fundamental re-balance of pricing in the retail fuel market. We need greater transparency and a fairer pricing model for both petrol and diesel. We realise that with more and more forecourts shutting up shop every month that fuel retailing may not be as profitable as it once was, but there seems to be a clear intention to make more money from a higher diesel price while at the same time being seen to maintain a lower petrol price.

“We as a nation of motorists are far more focused on petrol prices and therefore there is a perceived benefit from a retailer’s point of view in keeping petrol prices lower for the country’s 20m petrol car owners than it is for the 10m-plus diesel car drivers.”

June saw fuel prices maintain an even keel for motorists as a result of oil prices staying flat and the pound remaining stable too. The average price of a litre of petrol was 117p – 14p cheaper than 12 months ago, and diesel was 120.75p – 15p cheaper. Both have gone up since the early February average price lows of 106p for unleaded and 113p for diesel.

HMRC fuel usage statistics for May* show the Government brought in £2.2bn in fuel duty revenue – a similar figure to April. This represented a 2.8% year-on-year growth in revenue – £2.182bn in May 2014 compared to £2.243bn in May 2015.

May saw 1.478bn litres of petrol and 2.393bn diesel sold, making for a total of 3.871bn litres. Petrol sales experienced a 1.5% month-on-month growth and diesel a 1% drop on April, but year-on-year petrol declined by 1.6% compared to May 2014 and diesel usage grew by 5.7%.

Shows 3-month, 6-month and 12-month price and percentage change to 30/06/15

RAC Business brings BLOODHOUND SSC to Company Car In Action

Visitors to RAC Business stand have chance to win exclusive signed print of supersonic car

Visitors to this year’s Company Car In Action will have the chance see a replica of the supersonic car making its bid to be the world’s fastest thing on four wheels.

RAC Business has teamed up with the most exciting engineering project the UK has seen in decades – BLOODHOUND SSC, and will be bringing an exact replica model to CCIA on June 16 and 17 at Millbrook Proving Ground.

The scale model will be on view in Concept 1 where visitors can have their photograph taken with it and there is also the opportunity to win an exclusive framed print signed by project director Richard Noble and pilot Andy Green. On the RAC Business stand visitors can have a go at driving the BLOODHOUND SSC simulator with the fastest lap at the end of each day winning a print.

The team behind the BLOODHOUND SSC is confident it has the engineering and design expertise and inspiration to build a supersonic car which will exceed 1000mph and break the land speed record at Hakskeen Pan, South Africa, in August 2016.

David Wallace, director of RAC Business Services, said: “We are backing BLOODHOUND SSC as it represents a truly British challenge which champions UK engineering excellence and presents a unique opportunity to excite and engage the next generation of engineers.

“In the same way the team behind Bloodhound SSC is committed to their ambition, so is RAC Business committed to delivering the best performance for your fleet through insight, innovation and collective expertise that comes from being at the heart of the automotive sector for nearly 120 years.

“At RAC Business we believe in bringing clarity and insight to your business and fleet needs, with a range of products and services that present one single, complete picture of how your fleet is operating.

“We’re looking forward to attending Company Car In Action to talk to visitors about how we bring together a raft of services including RAC Breakdown, Accident Management, RAC Telematics, contact centres, commercial insurance and fuel cards, and deliver them through one single trusted supplier.”

RAC Business will be at Company Car In Action on June 16 and 17 at stand 9 in Concept 2 and is also sponsoring the Concierge Club in Concept 1.

RAC and Audi to set world record for most countries driven to on a single tank of fuel

Audi A6 ultra, two drivers, one tank of fuel – how many borders can they cross?

The RAC and Audi are joining forces to set a new world record for the greatest number of countries driven to on one tank of fuel.

The #RecordRoadTrip will begin in Maastricht in the Netherlands on Tuesday 9 June with motoring journalist Andrew Frankel and racing driver Rebecca Jackson taking turns at the wheel of an Audi A6 ultra.

Driving almost continuously, using as little fuel as possible to maximise their all-important miles-per-gallon figure, the pair will make their way on a carefully planned route from the Netherlands through Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Austria, Germany and Italy towards the Balkans.

The route has been painstakingly picked by the RAC, which has more than 100 years’ experience of providing European breakdown cover for members, trying to avoid the mpg-sapping effects of built-up, congested towns and cities, motorways and mountains.

An Audi A6 ultra was chosen for the record-setting adventure, not only because of its excellent fuel economy combined with a large 73-litre tank, but also because it is a ‘standard’ executive class production car, the like of which is regularly driven through Europe by British holidaymakers every summer. The car has not been modified in any way other than being fitted with fuel-efficient, low rolling resistance tyres.

RAC #RecordRoadTrip coordinator Simon Williams said: “We’re confident the combination of two skilled drivers, a highly fuel efficient Audi A6 Ultra and a route that takes in the most possible countries in the least fuel-taxing way will lead to a hard-to-beat record that covers at least 10 countries, hopefully more.

The Audi A6 ultra can do 67.3 miles to the gallon so we are looking at one tank of diesel taking Andrew and Rebecca over 1,000 miles, but driving a route of this length is never going to be straightforward and there will no doubt be many challenges along the way. That said, for most people, driving in Europe is usually far less onerous than they expect it to be.

In order for the RAC and Audi to set a new Guinness World Record for the most countries driven to on a single tank of fuel we had to start the attempt in mainland Europe as ferry or rail Channel crossings are not allowed.

Jon Zammett, head of Audi UK public relations, said: “With the RAC we are planning a serious record-setting run with all the detailed planning you would expect from a German car maker.

“At a time when MPG is a top priority we are using an A6 ultra to set a new world record, using real world parameters. It’s truly astounding how efficient our executive car can be in normal use. We are demonstrating advanced fuel efficiency and just how far an A6 ultra can travel on a single fill-up. By traversing Europe for as little as £88* (€123) in fuel costs this record trip will hammer the point home.“

Andrew Frankel, who is known to readers of the RAC Club Digital Magazine and to motorists generally as a trusted car reviewer, has prior experience of long-distance, fuel-efficient driving challenges having driven a car from the North African coast back to the UK on a single tank of fuel.

Andrew said: “I wanted to be involved in setting a record that stands the test of time, but I know that staying focused on the economy display, the sat nav, the speedo and the road, at three in the morning, in unfamiliar territory, is going to be exceedingly tough. Add to that competing with Rebecca for the best mpg figure and you have the makings of a real challenge.”

Rebecca Jackson is well-known in the motoring world as a racing driver, television presenter and journalist. She is currently planning to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2016.

Rebecca added: “Most people won’t think of me in terms of fuel-efficient driving, but if you’ve ever tried to handle a racing car in the wet then you’ll know how important smooth control is. I think this will help to give me the edge over Andrew in fuel economy, but no matter who proves to be the best our healthy competition should help us set a strong record.”

Roadside assistance for the #RecordRoadTrip team will be provided by the RAC’s new Patrol Ambassador of the Year, Ben Wilson from Manchester, who will follow the record-attempt car all the way from the Netherlands to wherever it eventually runs out of fuel.

RAC’s Simon Williams added: “While the RAC can’t be right behind everyone that drives on the continent our five-star, market-leading European breakdown cover is the next best thing as it gives that all-important reassurance that you and your vehicle will be taken care of should you be unlucky enough to have something go wrong.”

RAC Business partners SHB Hire Ltd with new five year contract

RAC Business has secured a new five year contract with one of the UK’s most interesting and diverse vehicle leasing businesses – SHB Hire Ltd.

Michael Parker from SHB with RAC Patrol Aaron Chalk

Michael Parker from SHB with RAC Patrol Aaron Chalk

The deal to provide Breakdown and European Breakdown Cover for SHB Hire Ltd will see RAC potentially coming to the assistance of more than 13,500 vehicles ranging from standard B2B hire cars, to golf buggies, all-terrain vehicles, cranes and other specialist vehicles.

SHB Hire Ltd has evolved from its original foundations as a building company, which began hiring vehicles in 1968, to a UK-wide business with nearly 50 years’ experience. It can also boast Europe’s largest 4×4 hire fleet and the UK’s largest hire fleet of HGV tippers and crane lorries, as well as being one of the largest providers of specialist vehicles.

SHB Hire has provided the provision of one of the largest hire fleets of 4×4 vehicles for Glastonbury Festival and operates the UK’s largest fleet of golf buggies. All of which means you can expect to see RAC patrol vans in some interesting locations as they come to the support of its new partner and their customers.

The RAC beat off stiff competition to secure the contract and was chosen based on its policy of investing in the latest innovations, the quality of its technical team and its drive to remain the number one breakdown organisation in the UK today. The partnership will be managed by a team of experienced account managers and a dedicated contact team for customers providing a high level of service.

The RAC has almost 120 years’ experience serving the needs of motorists and is well equipped to deal with the full range of vehicles offered by SHB. While its patrols have the technical skills and know-how to fix four out of five vehicles at the side of the road, they also have the capability to service the requirements of any vehicle ranging from a 3.5 tonne van to a 44 tonne truck and everything in between.

The RAC’s new director of business services David Wallace said: “This is a very exciting win for our Business Services team and secures a partnership with one of the UK’s leading vehicle hire companies with a wide range of vehicle needs serving a range of businesses from construction to finance and distribution to leisure.

“The RAC has extensive experience in serving traditional motorists, B2B fleets and meeting the needs of a wide variety of business customers. We recognise how critical it is to business customers to keep their vehicle fleets on the road and to ensure that  downtime is kept to an absolute minimum.

“Our industry experts have in-depth knowledge of the diverse range of trucks and construction vehicles, ancillary equipment and haulage in service today and so can provide a professional trusted service to meet the customer’s needs. This has led to a strong partnership that we believe will continue to grow and deliver major benefits to SHB Hire Ltd and to their customers.”

Nicky Simpson, Commercial Director at SHB Hire Ltd, said: “I looking forward to working with the RAC and I believe our customers will see the benefits in the relationship through quick response times and more repairs being carried out roadside.

“A key theme to awarding this contract was having a ‘first time, right solution’ culture. We wanted to ensure the correct specialist attendance is provided resulting in minimal downtime for our customers, which I believe the RAC can deliver.”
